Welcome to our third week in the fourth grade. Many things are happening and the students have dug into research for our Unit 1 Inquiry into “Rights and Responsibilities.”
Tuesday begins Mother Tongue Program and ESL after our normal class periods. It begins at 2:40 and ends at 3:25. After School Extra Curricular Activities then begins at 3:25 and completes at 4:10. Please pick up your child at appropriate times.
Math: We have concentrated on map reading and using our math text as a resource to look for information. Since we are learning research on the computers, we are also learning to research in our book. Next: bar graphs, circle graphs, preparing graphs from collected data
Language Arts: Our first concentration has been on Parts of Speech, vocabulary for developing larger sentences, and practicing the location of the Parts of Speech in a simple sentence. Next: Vocabulary for compound and complex sentences, developing even larger sentences using coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions. I am reading aloud The Adventures of Robin Hood, retold from the Howard Pyle original, one chapter a day.
Music: Students are using the recorder while reviewing and learning to read the notes on a staff.
Art: Students have created their names in a swirl type painting, please stop by and see them on the bulletin board on 2nd floor.
Unit of Inquiry: Social Studies, Students are concentrating on Human Rights around the world. Each student has picked a country to concentrate on and is researching a violation of human rights in that country. Students have chosen countries mainly in S. America and Africa. We are learning how to read statistics regarding these ideas so you may ask them what they have found out about the country they are studying. Next: Students will preparing to write a long paragraph about the violation of human rights they’ve learned about in their particular country.
Thank you for checking the homework folders. Due to working so hard using our Math Text as a resource, they have not had much to take home. That will be changing!
Our library book exchange will be on Thursdays. Please return the books then. Thanks! I will be adjusting the schedule that is posted on our wiki.
Thank you for your support, I will be posting and printing the classroom newsletter until the beginning of October, please check the wiki each week.
